Nutrition expert Ralf Bohlmann tests the new diet5!

Team Layenberger

His podcasts are listened to by more than a million people annually. His presentations are sought-after highlights at trade fairs and corporate events.

Practical, self-tested advice, coupled with skillful storytelling and ruthless honesty – that's Bohlmann's secret to success. So we were very curious to see what the 58-year-old would say after putting our daily ration diet, diet5, to the test.

He tried out the diet5 concept for a week. Here's how it works: Five different diet5 products per day – selected from three shakes, muesli, bowls, soups, or ready-made shakes – make up your individual daily ration. By consuming five units every two to three hours throughout the day, you no longer have to worry about hunger pangs or cravings during your diet. We also ensure that your body is supplied with sufficient vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients through the optimally balanced nutritional profile (in accordance with the legal requirements of Regulation (EU) No. 2017/1798).

First, the extremely fit, normal-weight, and very active Bohlmann explains the parameters of his analysis: "Of course, I don't belong to the core target group of the daily ration diet5. That made it all the more important for me to test the products for usability. Can you manage with them? What do they actually do? What are the advantages of such a system? How do they taste? How quick and easy are they to prepare? All of this is important because, with a diet, it's especially crucial not to give any reasons to quit. If something isn't right or is annoying, it often overshadows the positive aspects and provides excuses for giving up."

Tomato and basil soup – simply delicious and creamy!

Then he jumps right into the practical test: "Today I had the Mixed Berries muesli for breakfast – bursting with flavor – as the perfect start. Then, because I got off to a slightly late start, I continued with the lunch soup. Tomato and basil – and that's absolutely remarkable. Because this soup is so creamy and delicious that I could easily make it for the whole family. My wife and children wouldn't even notice that it's a diet product."

Ralf Bohlmann really gets going when it comes to soups: "Everything about the potato soup is perfect, and I've already had the Thai curry version a few times as a final dish in the evening. The subtle but noticeable spiciness lasts long enough until it's time to go to sleep."

The expert delves even deeper into the topic: "You could definitely call me a soup lover. I like it when my daily meals include a liquid component, when I don't have to bite into or take a bite of something with every meal. Soups are important in a varied diet. They're also food for the soul: warm and intensely flavorful. You can feel the soup in your mouth and in your stomach – you should never underestimate that feeling of well-being when eating. But: In practice, they're also very labor-intensive – and that's why they're rather rare on our menu at home."

Here he follows up emphatically: "The ease of preparation has convinced me with all diet5 products. Whether muesli, shake, bowl or soup - it's ready in no time and looks appetizing. For my philosophy, the protein content is a very important factor - and here too I give it a: excellent job! No matter how you combine the individual products, you always get a good supply of protein."

The diet5 concept is brilliant because it's super easy to stick to the plan!

Delicious. Appetizing. Simple. Sensible. And varied. For Ralf Bohlmann, these are the most important aspects for a diet to work: "We mustn't forget that people who want to use diet5 often come from an extreme starting point. diet5 provides between 900 and 1000 calories throughout the day – if someone is coming from 3000 or 3500 calories a day, then the body will naturally notice. But it works because the staggered portions of five individual servings are very effective at preventing cravings. When the 'craving' hits, I can have a small snack again. It's just a small snack – you have to get that into your head and let it work!"

The expert emphasizes one major advantage once again: "The simplicity of the concept is also its reliability. I know I'm consuming fewer than 1000 calories; I don't have to weigh anything, portion it, omit anything, or recalculate countless times. If I stick to the diet5 concept, I simply can't reach 1200 or 1500 calories per day. This provides the certainty of adhering to the plan—and that's absolutely crucial when it comes to mindful eating. Being sure you're doing something right, with the guarantee that all essential nutrients are included in this daily intake."

Ralf Bohlmann, an expert AND a man of practical experience, offers a contrasting example: "If I want to put together five meals at home in my own kitchen that total almost 1000 calories per day but contain all the essential nutrients, it's an enormous amount of work. I have to use the kitchen scales for every single step and usually end up throwing most of what I put on my plate right back off. Here at diet5, I put together my favorite flavors from five product groups and I'm on the safe side."

Feeling suddenly hungry between meals? Ready-made shakes can help!

Ready-made shakes are crucial for him. Bohlmann explains: "A dangerous diet killer is the question: What do I eat when I'm out and about and don't have the time or opportunity to prepare something as simple as a shake myself? The classic scenario: You're standing in a pedestrian zone, surrounded by bakeries, butchers, and fast-food chains – and suddenly you're hit with that sudden hunger pang. Finding a meal with 180 to 200 calories out there in our consumer-driven world is virtually impossible. That would be a bowl of lettuce with a drop of vinegar and a small piece of turkey breast. As soon as the salad is covered in dressing or the turkey is breaded, you've crossed the line. And with a pretzel stick with cheese and ham, you can pretty much forget about the whole day – that's well over 300 calories, and the hunger will return in no time."

That's precisely why he appreciates the diet5 ready-to-drink shakes in Tetra Pak cartons. "They're perfect for situations like this. The packs fit in any bag. Twist open, drink – the great taste is remarkable – and the problem is solved." Dear Ralf Bohlmann, we are very, very pleased with this test result. But of course, one last question remains after the practical test: What can we do even better? What's your request to our product development team? "That's simple: more soups! More of these delicious soups that can be prepared in a minute. And when you're done with them, please make even more soups!"
